Kiln: Bigei 美芸
Potter: Hirata Atsumi 平田あつみ
A classic Japanese bonsai pot by Bigei (美芸), produced in Tokoname and bearing the impressed square kiln seal to the base. This is a low rectangular form (choho-bachi 長方鉢) with softly rounded corners and a subtly flared profile, giving the pot a calm, balanced presence.
The rim is flat and gently rounded (hirabuchi 平縁), with a slight outward projection that frames the planting area cleanly. From the feet upward, the body rises with a very gentle outward flare (hirogaru 広がり), most noticeable at the corners, before meeting the rim. This restrained flare adds visual stability while maintaining a classical, understated silhouette. A single horizontal mid-band (chudan obi 中段帯) encircles the body, providing quiet structure and proportion.
The clay is unglazed (muyu 無釉), fired to a warm brown tone typical of Tokoname iron-rich bodies. The surface is smooth and compact with a soft natural sheen, showing early signs of patina (aji 味) along the rim, edges, and corners from age and handling.
The interior is cleanly finished, with gently sloped walls leading to a flat planting surface. The base is well executed, featuring a recessed foot ring and four low integrated feet (te-ashi 手足), neatly shaped and evenly spaced, giving the pot a stable yet unobtrusive stance.
Drainage consists of two main water holes (mizunuki-ana 水抜き穴) accompanied by four smaller wiring holes (harigane-ana 針金穴), offering excellent functionality for secure planting and long-term cultivation.
