Description:
A refined, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Bigei (美芸), the kiln name and artist name of Hirata Atsumi (平田あつみ), produced in Tokoname. The pot is of round form (丸鉢 maru-bachi), executed in unglazed, iron-rich clay, displaying the understated strength and precision associated with Bigei Kiln work.
The rim is softly everted with a subtle internal lip (内縁 uchibuchi), giving the vessel a grounded yet elegant profile and a strong sense of visual balance. The exterior body is accented by a continuous raised bead band (鋲文様 byō-mon yō) around the mid-to-lower section, introducing controlled texture and rhythm without excess ornamentation.
The clay surface presents a warm brown tone with fine granular character (荒土 aratsuchi), and shows a well-developed natural patina (古色 koshoku) acquired through age and careful use. The base is neatly finished with proportioned cut feet (切足 kiri-ashi), providing stability and lift. The underside bears the incised signature 「美芸」, clearly identifying the maker.
The base is formed with one central drainage opening and three auxiliary wiring openings (水抜き穴・針金穴 mizunuki-ana / harigane-ana), all integrated during forming prior to firing, preserving both functional integrity and aesthetic intent. The overall composition conveys balance (均整 kinsei), restraint, and quiet authority, making it well suited for shohin and other small-scale bonsai.

About Bigei (Hirata Atsumi, 美芸 / 平田あつみ)
Bigei, real name Hirata Atsumi, is one of Tokoname’s most respected bonsai potters. Renowned for his distinctive vermilion (朱泥 shudei) and purple clay (紫泥 shidei) unglazed pieces, he is particularly admired in the shohin bonsai world for his precision, balance, and deeply personal style.
Born in 1939, Bigei began working in ceramics in 1958. He moved to Tokoname in 1969, entering pottery without any family lineage — his father was a carpenter. He endured a demanding four-year apprenticeship, surviving only on food and shelter, before establishing his own independent kiln in 1976.
His rise to prominence is legendary: he is the only well-known Tokoname potter who built his reputation entirely from scratch — 徒手空拳 toshukūken (“with bare hands”).
After 2017, he gradually produced fewer works, creating only for himself or close acquaintances.
