Description / 説明
A highly individual vintage Japanese bonsai pot (日本盆栽鉢) by Bushuan 不識庵 – Fukuda Shigeru 福田茂, from Tokoname 常滑市.
The pot is formed as a distinctive six-sided hexagonal vessel(六角鉢), with each wall gently flaring outward towards a substantial projecting external lip(外縁). The lip follows the complete hexagonal outline and gives the relatively compact pot a powerful and well-balanced upper profile.
The most striking feature is the expressive glaze (釉景). A deep black to blue-black ground (黒釉・濃藍釉) is overlaid by remarkable flowing areas of cobalt and violet-blue, together with pale blue-grey, green and celadon-like tones. The glaze has naturally gathered and run vertically down the walls, producing pronounced glaze drips(釉垂れ), glaze pooling(釉溜まり) and firing variation (窯変).
These irregular glaze flows create a particularly rich 景色(keshiki), with each of the six faces displaying a different pattern. The contrast between the dark ground, blue-violet areas and softer green-grey runs gives the pot considerable depth and a strongly individual ceramic character.
The hexagonal body is supported by six stepped, angled feet(六足・段足), corresponding with the six-sided geometry of the vessel. Their compact construction provides good 安定感(anteikan) while allowing the unusual glaze and strong 六角 silhouette to remain dominant.
The underside is left largely unglazed, exposing the warm clay body (胎土), and carries an impressed ceramic seal(陶印) within a framed square cartouche.
The base is arranged with four substantial openings(四穴), serving for drainage and wiring (排水・針金兼用穴) and distributed evenly around the hexagonal floor of the pot.
The pot is accompanied by a fitted wooden storage box(桐箱).
The box is labelled: 外縁段足六角鉢 福田茂, identifying the piece as a projecting-rim, stepped-foot hexagonal pot by Fukuda Shigeru.

Collector's Note / コレクターズノート
A particularly characterful Bushuan 不識庵・福田茂 pot, combining the architectural geometry of a 六角鉢, substantial 外縁, and unusual 六足・段足 with an exceptionally expressive glaze surface.
The dramatic 黒釉・濃藍釉 ground, flowing blue-green 釉垂れ, natural 窯変 and accumulated 景色 make the glaze the defining feature of this example. Together with the impressed 陶印 and labelled 桐箱, it presents as a distinctive and highly individual piece of Japanese bonsai pottery.
