Description:

A superb artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by 2nd Generation Gyozan, Nakano Yuuji (二代 雅山 中野裕二), one of the most highly regarded contemporary potters working in Tokoname. This elegant oval bonsai container (楕円鉢) is crafted from finely refined unglazed clay (無釉), displaying a warm golden-brown tone enriched by subtle mineral inclusions throughout the clay body.

The pot features a broad projecting rounded rim (玉縁) that forms a strong visual frame around the planting area. The lip is finished with a refined raised border, creating a harmonious balance between strength and elegance whilst maintaining the understated shibui (渋い) character for which Gyozan's work is renowned.

The gently curved walls flow gracefully from the base towards the rim, creating a soft and balanced profile ideally suited to refined deciduous and broadleaf compositions. The continuous oval form is enhanced by a subtle lower basal band (胴帯), which provides visual structure and reinforces the pot's refined proportions without interrupting its elegant lines.

The container stands on finely executed integrated cut feet (切足), providing excellent stability and elevation whilst preserving the clean silhouette of the design. The feet are carefully proportioned to complement the gentle movement of the body, contributing to the overall sense of harmony and balance.

The interior offers generous planting space and features a central drainage hole (水抜き穴) together with four auxiliary drainage holes and four wiring holes (針金穴), allowing excellent drainage and secure anchoring of bonsai material during both development and exhibition display.

The finely textured clay surface has begun to develop a pleasing natural patina (古色), enhancing the depth and warmth of the unglazed finish. This subtle maturation of the clay body adds character and will continue to improve with age and careful use.

The underside bears the impressed Gyozan kiln seal (雅山印), confirming the work of 2nd Generation Gyozan, Nakano Yuuji. As is typical of many later production examples, the pot is seal marked only (印のみ).

A refined exhibition-quality bonsai container combining exceptional craftsmanship, elegant proportions, and timeless Tokoname aesthetics. Particularly well suited to deciduous species, flowering bonsai, and refined conifer compositions where its quiet sophistication can be fully appreciated.
