Description:

A superb artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by 2nd Generation Gyozan, Nakano Yuuji (二代 雅山 中野裕二), one of the most highly respected contemporary potters working in Tokoname. This substantial rectangular bonsai container (長方鉢) is crafted from finely refined unglazed clay (無釉), displaying a warm chocolate-brown tone with subtle mineral character throughout the clay body.

The pot possesses an elegant and balanced silhouette, with gently flaring walls rising from the base towards a broad projecting rim. The raised lip is finished with a refined raised border, creating a powerful visual frame around the planting area whilst maintaining a distinctly shibui (渋い) character. The clean, uninterrupted lines and restrained detailing demonstrate the refined aesthetic for which Gyozan is renowned.

The body exhibits a graceful outward flare from the recessed feet towards the rim, creating a strong sense of stability and balance. A subtle shoulder transition beneath the rim adds depth and definition to the profile, whilst the softly rounded corners contribute to the harmonious proportions of the container. The combination of the broad lip, refined border, and gently flared profile gives the pot an understated elegance suitable for exhibition-quality bonsai.

The pot stands on finely executed stepped recessed feet (段足), integrated into the underside of the container. This recessed construction provides excellent stability whilst visually reducing the mass of the pot, creating a refined sense of elevation and balance. The understated treatment of the feet complements the clean architectural lines of the container and enhances its quiet sophistication.

The interior offers generous planting space and features a central drainage hole (水抜き穴) together with six auxiliary drainage holes and four wiring holes (針金穴), allowing excellent drainage and secure anchoring of bonsai material during both development and exhibition display.

The finely textured clay surface has begun to acquire a pleasing natural patina (古色), enhancing the depth and warmth of the unglazed finish. This subtle maturation complements the understated sophistication of the design and will continue to improve with age and careful use.

The underside bears the impressed Gyozan kiln seal (雅山印), confirming the work of 2nd Generation Gyozan, Nakano Yuuji. As is typical of many later Gyozan production pieces, the pot is seal marked only (印のみ).

An outstanding exhibition-quality bonsai container suitable for powerful deciduous, conifer, and broadleaf compositions, combining functionality, craftsmanship, and timeless Tokoname aesthetics.
