Description / 商品説明
A refined vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Second Generation Hisada Keizan(二代 久田桂山), Hisada Sadao 久田貞雄, from the Hisada Kiln(久田窯) of Tokoname 常滑市.
This 39.8cm oval unglazed bonsai pot(楕円形無釉鉢) is beautifully proportioned, combining a broad, low profile with carefully controlled architectural detailing. Its restrained design allows the natural qualities of the Tokoname clay to remain an important part of the composition.
The broad oval form(楕円鉢) is defined at the upper perimeter by a pronounced projecting rim(外縁). Beneath the rim, the walls open gently outward (外開き), creating an elegant transition toward the mouth and giving the vessel a strong but refined silhouette.
The interior is finished with a clearly defined internal rim(内縁), creating a clean frame around the planting area and adding further refinement to the upper structure.
Particularly distinctive is the treatment of the lower body, where two closely spaced horizontal basal bands(二重下帯) encircle the vessel. These restrained parallel lines provide an elegant transition between the main body (胴) and the base, visually grounding the shallow oval and giving the lower profile additional depth and definition.
The vessel is supported by four broad integrated feet(四足・一体足), formed continuously with the body and subtly angled in profile. Their low proportions preserve the elegant stance of the oval while providing a convincing sense of 安定感 (anteikan – stability), 均衡 (kinko – balance) and 調和 (chowa – harmony).
The pot is formed from a warm sandy-brown Tokoname clay(常滑土) with fine natural granular inclusions. Fired unglazed(無釉), the surface retains an attractive and tactile 土味 (tsuchi-aji), complemented by gentle tonal variation and developing 経年変化 (kenen henka).
Subtle 景色 (keshiki) is beginning to establish across the surface, giving the clay greater depth and the understated 渋み (shibumi) particularly valued in traditional unglazed bonsai containers. Continued cultivation will allow these qualities to mature further with age.
The base incorporates an excellent functional arrangement of two principal drainage holes(排水穴) together with four smaller drainage/wiring holes(排水・針金穴), providing effective drainage and secure anchoring of the tree.
The underside is neatly finished and carries the impressed square Keizan seal(桂山角印). This is specifically a Seal Only(印のみ) example.
The combination of 楕円鉢, 外縁, subtle 内縁, gently opening walls, 二重下帯, low integrated 四足, and naturally textured 常滑土 gives this pot an exceptionally composed appearance, expressing the traditional principle of 用の美 (yo no bi – beauty through function).

About the Potter / 作家について
Hisada Sadao 久田貞雄, born in 1930 in Tokoname, is the Second Generation Hisada Keizan(二代 久田桂山). He is the son of Hisada Shizuo 久田静夫, who established the Hisada workshop in Tokoname in 1929.
Sadao continued and developed the Hisada family's ceramic tradition, becoming particularly associated with traditional Tokoname bonsai containers and refined unglazed pottery(無釉盆栽鉢). His work demonstrates careful attention to proportion, structural clarity and the practical requirements of serious bonsai cultivation.
In his unglazed work, the inherent qualities of Tokoname clay(常滑土) are allowed to become part of the aesthetic. Through firing, age and cultivation, the surface develops individual 土味, 経年変化 and 景色, creating the quiet maturity characteristic of traditional Japanese bonsai pottery.
His restrained approach reflects 渋み (shibumi – understated refinement), 品格 (hinkaku – dignity), 調和 (chowa – harmony) and the functional beauty of 用の美 (yo no bi).
Collector's Note / コレクターズノート
Born in 1930, Hisada Sadao 久田貞雄 is now in his mid-nineties and remains a living representative of one of the senior generations associated with traditional Tokoname bonsai-pot craftsmanship. His exceptionally long connection with the ceramic traditions of Tokoname places his work within an important period of post-war Japanese bonsai-pot history.
This 39.8cm 楕円鉢 is a particularly accomplished example of Keizan's restrained unglazed work. Its broad, shallow proportions are strengthened by the projecting 外縁 and subtle 内縁, while the distinctive double basal band(二重下帯) gives the lower body an elegant layered structure. The four broad integrated feet(四足・一体足) preserve the low stance of the vessel and provide excellent visual stability.
This particular piece is a Seal Only(印のみ) example, carrying the clearly impressed square 桂山角印 as its identifying maker's mark. It should therefore be distinguished from Keizan pots carrying an additional hand-incised 銘.
The warm sandy 常滑土, developing 土味・経年変化・景色, and carefully considered arrangement of two principal drainage holes with four additional drainage/wiring holes(排水穴・針金穴) make this an especially complete and highly usable example of traditional Tokoname bonsai pottery.
At this stage in Keizan's exceptionally long life, vintage examples of his work provide a tangible connection to an increasingly senior generation of Tokoname craftsmanship. The combination of mature clay character, disciplined proportions, distinctive construction and 用の美 makes this pot equally compelling as a functional bonsai container and as a collectable example of Japanese ceramic heritage.
