A refined vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Second Generation Hisada Keizan（二代 久田桂山）, Hisada Sadao 久田貞雄, from the Hisada Kiln（久田窯） of Tokoname 常滑市.

At 44.0cm, this is a substantial and beautifully proportioned oval unglazed bonsai pot（楕円形無釉鉢）, characterised by a broad, low silhouette and the restrained elegance associated with traditional Tokoname bonsai ceramics.

The continuous oval form（楕円形） flows smoothly around the vessel, creating a calm and uninterrupted profile. The gently tapering walls give the pot visual lightness while maintaining a convincing sense of 安定感 (anteikan – stability) and 均衡 (kinko – balance).

The upper perimeter is precisely formed with an understated rim and a subtle internal rim（内縁）, neatly defining the planting area while preserving the simplicity of the overall silhouette.

The exterior is deliberately restrained, allowing the quality of the clay, proportions and workmanship to provide the principal aesthetic character.

The vessel is made from fine Tokoname clay（常滑土） and fired unglazed（無釉） to an attractive soft grey-beige tone. The naturally textured surface displays a pleasing 土味 (tsuchi-aji), with subtle variations created through firing, age and use.

The clay has developed attractive 経年変化 (kenen henka) and subtle 景色 (keshiki), bringing greater depth and maturity to the otherwise restrained surface. Together these qualities create the quiet 渋み (shibumi) so highly appreciated in traditional Japanese unglazed bonsai containers.

About the Potter / 作家について

Hisada Sadao 久田貞雄, born in 1930 in Tokoname, is the Second Generation Hisada Keizan（二代 久田桂山）. He is the son of Hisada Shizuo 久田静夫, who established the Hisada workshop in Tokoname in 1929.

Sadao continued the family's ceramic tradition and became particularly associated with traditional Tokoname bonsai containers, especially refined unglazed pots（無釉盆栽鉢） in which natural clay character, proportion and horticultural functionality are carefully balanced.

His work allows the qualities of Tokoname clay（常滑土） to remain central. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, Keizan's unglazed vessels derive their character from carefully controlled silhouettes, subtle structural details and the changing appearance of the clay itself.

Through firing, age and cultivation, these surfaces develop individual 土味・経年変化・景色, acquiring the restrained 渋み and 品格 particularly appreciated in traditional Japanese bonsai ceramics.

His work embodies 調和 (chowa – harmony), 均衡 (kinko – balance), 品格 (hinkaku – dignity) and the traditional principle of 用の美 (yo no bi – beauty through function).

Born in 1930, Hisada Sadao 久田貞雄 is now in his mid-nineties and remains a living representative of one of the senior generations associated with traditional Tokoname bonsai-pot craftsmanship. His exceptionally long connection with Tokoname places his work within an important period of post-war Japanese bonsai-pot history.

This substantial 44.0cm 楕円形鉢 is an excellent example of the quiet restraint found in Keizan's traditional unglazed work. The broad oval silhouette is beautifully controlled, with the subtle 内縁, gently tapering walls and carefully formed 切足 providing structure without disturbing the continuous flowing character of the vessel.

Its simplicity is particularly important. With little decorative intervention, attention is naturally drawn toward the proportions, workmanship and quality of the 常滑土 itself. The developing 土味・経年変化・景色 give the surface individuality and a mature 渋み that should continue to evolve through cultivation.
