Description / 作品説明
An exceptional vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot attributed to 1st Generation Master Gyozan, Nakano Yukizyou (中野行常), from the renowned pottery region of Tokoname (常滑).
This beautifully proportioned 37.0cm rectangular unglazed bonsai pot (長方形無釉盆栽鉢) displays a refined architectural silhouette, combining gracefully flared corners (隅反り) with gently outward-curving walls and a broad, projecting upper rim (外縁).
The elegant rim creates a strong horizontal presence, while the subtle curvature of the walls introduces a sense of movement and refinement. A finely defined lower basal band (腰帯) follows the perimeter, providing a harmonious transition to the substantial recessed stepped feet (段足).
The feet are carefully shaped beneath the corners, giving the container a pleasing sense of elevation while maintaining the strong, balanced proportions associated with traditional Gyozan craftsmanship.
The unglazed clay displays a beautiful reddish-purple tone (紫泥), with subtle variations of warm brown and deeper charcoal shading around the rim, corners and feet. The fine natural texture contributes to its attractive tsuchiaji (土味), while the restrained design embodies the Japanese aesthetics of shibumi (渋み) and chowa (調和).
The spacious rectangular planting area incorporates two larger drainage holes (排水穴) and four smaller wiring holes (針金穴), providing practical drainage and secure anchoring for bonsai cultivation.
The underside bears a centrally positioned impressed Gyozan seal (行山印), an important identifying feature associated with the distinguished Nakano pottery tradition.

About the Potter / 作家紹介 – Gyozan (行山), Nakano Family
Nakano Yukizyou (中野行常), recognised as 1st Generation Gyozan (初代行山), was an important Japanese bonsai potter associated with the celebrated Tokoname pottery tradition (常滑焼).
His work became highly regarded for its exceptional clay quality, carefully balanced proportions and refined interpretation of traditional Japanese and Chinese bonsai container designs.
Gyozan pottery is particularly appreciated for its beautiful natural clay colours, including distinctive reddish-brown and purple tones, together with its precise craftsmanship and elegant architectural forms.
The Nakano family's pottery tradition continued through subsequent generations, establishing Gyozan (行山) as one of the most respected names among collectors of Japanese bonsai ceramics.
The passing of Master Gyozan in February 2026, during the period of the historic 100th Kokufu-ten (第100回国風盆栽展), marked a poignant moment for the Japanese bonsai community. His passing represents the loss of an important figure in Japanese bonsai ceramics, while the craftsmanship and artistic heritage of the Nakano family continue to be appreciated through the remarkable pottery produced under the Gyozan name.
Collector's Note / コレクターズノート
This elegant 37.0cm Gyozan rectangular unglazed bonsai pot is a fine example of the restrained craftsmanship associated with 1st Generation Nakano Yukizyou (中野行常).
The beautifully flared corners (隅反り), broad projecting rim, gently curved walls and carefully executed recessed stepped feet (段足) create a particularly harmonious architectural composition.
The rich reddish-purple clay (紫泥), complemented by subtle darker shading, enhances the pot's natural tsuchiaji (土味) and refined shibumi (渋み).
The centrally impressed Gyozan seal (行山印) adds further collector interest, while the generous proportions make this an excellent container for a mature bonsai requiring a strong yet elegant presentation.
With the passing of Master Gyozan in February 2026, pottery associated with the Nakano family's distinguished tradition carries particular historical and sentimental significance for collectors.
A distinguished example of traditional Tokoname craftsmanship, combining beauty of form (造形美), balance (均整) and understated refinement (渋み).
