Handmade: Unglazed round bonsai pot (丸鉢・無釉)
A finely handcrafted Japanese bonsai pot by Rizan (利山), executed in the traditional Tokoname style while displaying an unusually bold and organic surface treatment. The elegant, rounded lip (丸縁) transitions into a well-defined internal rim (内縁), creating a refined visual frame that contrasts beautifully with the dramatic exterior.
The gently swollen body (胴張り) gives the pot a low, stable profile, while the entire outer wall has been meticulously carved with a deeply textured tree-bark finish (樹皮肌). The rugged relief catches light from every angle, creating remarkable depth and movement and evoking the appearance of ancient, weathered bark. This distinctive treatment enhances the naturalistic aesthetic while remaining balanced and refined.
The warm chocolate-brown Tokoname clay exhibits attractive firing variations (焼色) that complement the heavily textured surface. The understated interior has been left smooth, allowing the craftsmanship of the form to take precedence.
The pot stands upon three carefully modelled cloud feet (雲足), which provide excellent visual stability while reinforcing the classical Japanese aesthetic. The underside features one central drainage hole together with six evenly positioned wiring holes (水抜き穴・針金穴), making it equally suitable for exhibition-quality bonsai cultivation.
The pot is finished with a hand-incised Rizan (利山) signature (爪描き), confirming its authenticity as an individually crafted work.

Potter Biography
Very little published information is available regarding Rizan (利山), although signed examples are recognised by collectors of Tokoname bonsai pottery. His work demonstrates the traditional Tokoname emphasis on functional craftsmanship while occasionally incorporating distinctive naturalistic surface textures, such as the deeply carved bark-effect (樹皮肌) seen on this example. Individually hand-signed pieces are considerably less common than production wares and are appreciated by collectors for their character and originality.
Collector's Notes (収集家のコメント)
This is an unusually expressive example of Tokoname craftsmanship. The combination of the powerful bark-textured exterior (樹皮肌), elegant rounded profile, and hand-modelled cloud feet (雲足) creates a pot that pairs exceptionally well with rugged deciduous species, old pines, junipers and naturalistic compositions. Hand-signed examples by Rizan (利山) are encountered relatively infrequently, making this a particularly desirable piece for collectors seeking distinctive Tokoname pottery beyond the better-known production kilns.
