Handmade Japanese Bonsai Pot – Rectangular Ruri Glazed (長方形 瑠璃釉)
Description:
A refined handmade bonsai pot by Satomi Terahata (寺幡サトミ), the second-generation ceramic artist of the distinguished Terahata Kiln (寺幡窯) in Seto (瀬戸市). Continuing the artistic legacy established by her father, the celebrated potter Terahata Masan (寺畑真山), Satomi produces elegant bonsai containers renowned for their refined sugata (姿), exceptional glazing and quiet Japanese aesthetics.
Finished in a magnificent Ruri glaze (瑠璃釉), this rectangular bonsai pot displays a rich cobalt-blue surface with exceptional depth, brilliance and luminosity. The beautifully controlled glaze enhances the elegant katachi (形) of the vessel while reflecting the understated beauty of shibui (渋い), for which the Terahata family is highly respected.
The gently flared walls (外反する胴) rise gracefully towards a refined rounded rim (口縁), creating a harmonious and well-balanced sugata (姿). A carefully defined internal rim (内縁) frames the planting area, adding both structural strength and visual refinement. The softly radiused corners complete the composition, lending the pot an elegant sense of hin (品) without unnecessary ornamentation.
The underside is supported by four finely carved recessed stepped feet (段付き彫り足), providing a graceful visual lift while maintaining excellent stability. Their crisp, restrained execution complements the clean architectural lines of the pot and demonstrates the meticulous craftsmanship associated with the Terahata Kiln.
The base is fitted with two drainage holes (水抜き穴) together with four wiring holes (針金穴), ensuring excellent drainage and secure anchoring of bonsai material for both cultivation and exhibition.
The underside bears the impressed Satomi Terahata seal together with the Terahata Kiln (寺幡窯) mark, confirming the authenticity and provenance of the piece.
Combining refined proportions, outstanding glaze quality and impeccable craftsmanship, this elegant Seto-yaki (瀬戸焼) bonsai pot is ideally suited to shohin and medium-sized deciduous trees, flowering species and refined evergreen compositions where the brilliance of the Ruri glaze (瑠璃釉) provides a beautiful contrast to the tree.
