A superb vintage handcrafted Japanese bonsai pot by Syu-Zan (舟山), the art name of Suzuki Shinji (鈴木伸二), produced at his workshop in Togo, Aichi Prefecture (愛知県). This elegant rectangular bonsai pot reflects the restrained architectural style and refined craftsmanship for which Syu-Zan became highly respected among collectors and professional bonsai artists.

The pot features a finely proportioned projecting lip (口縁) surrounding a well-defined internal rim (内縁). Its clean straight-sided walls (直胴) create a powerful and harmonious silhouette, while each face is enhanced by a finely recessed framed panel (額縁意匠), adding subtle depth and refinement without disturbing the purity of the overall design.

The vessel is supported by four precisely executed integrated cut feet (切足), which project subtly outwards to provide excellent stability while maintaining perfectly balanced proportions. The beautifully blended clay displays the rich chocolate-brown tones and exceptional tsuchi-aji (土味) for which Suzuki Shinji became renowned. Over the decades, the surface has developed a magnificent natural patina (経年変化), enriching the warmth and character of the clay. The understated form embodies the timeless beauty of shibui (渋い) together with the harmony of chowa (調和), allowing the bonsai to remain the principal focus of the composition.

The underside bears the impressed Syu-Zan (舟山) seal and is finished with five functional holes (排水穴・針金穴), comprising one central drainage hole and four auxiliary holes suitable for either drainage or wiring. Their carefully considered arrangement reflects the practical elegance and meticulous craftsmanship that characterise Suzuki Shinji's work.

Biography – Suzuki Shinji (Syu-Zan 舟山) / 鈴木伸二

Suzuki Shinji (鈴木伸二), known throughout the bonsai world by his artistic name Syu-Zan (舟山), was born in 1928 in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. Before becoming a full-time ceramic artist, he pursued a successful career in banking. In 1971, at the age of forty-three, he left the banking profession to devote himself entirely to the creation of handcrafted bonsai pottery.

Working from his studio in Togo, Aichi Prefecture, close to Japan's historic ceramic centres, Syu-Zan developed a distinctive artistic style inspired by the timeless beauty of classical Chinese Yixing (宜興) pottery. Rather than reproducing antique forms, he interpreted their spirit through refined Japanese craftsmanship, producing vessels of remarkable balance, subtlety and permanence.

To achieve the distinctive character of his pottery, Syu-Zan blended carefully selected Japanese clays with imported Chinese clay, creating ceramic bodies celebrated for their depth, texture and exceptional ageing qualities. His pots became widely admired for their elegant proportions, understated forms and remarkable ability to complement rather than dominate the bonsai they were created to display.

During his lifetime, Syu-Zan's work was selected on numerous occasions for display at the prestigious Kokufu-ten (国風展), a distinction reserved for only the finest bonsai containers. Following his passing in 1988, his reputation has continued to grow, and today his works are regarded among the most collectable examples of modern Japanese bonsai ceramics. His artistic legacy continues through his apprentice Sen-Syu (仙舟), ensuring that Syu-Zan's philosophy and craftsmanship continue to influence contemporary bonsai pottery.
