This refined Shohin bonsai pot (小品盆栽鉢, shōhin bonsai hachi) is handcrafted by master potter Terahata Mazan (寺畑真山), also known as Mayama Mazan (真山窯). Based in the renowned pottery town of Tokoname (常滑)—one of Japan’s historic "Six Ancient Kilns" (日本六古窯, Nihon Rokkoyō)—Mazan is celebrated for harmonizing traditional Japanese aesthetics with meticulous craftsmanship.
This particular piece features a broad square form (長方形, chōhō-gata) with elegantly flared walls, a subtly bevelled rim in fukuro-mimi (袋耳) style, and refined stepped corners that flow into strong stepped feet (段足, dan-ashi). These elements lend the pot a grounded yet visually light presence.
The cream crackle glaze (貫入釉, kannyū-yū) is beautifully applied, catching light in shifting tones and beginning to develop a natural patina (景色, keshiki). This evolving surface quality enhances contrast when paired with bonsai compositions, adding depth and character over time.
Perfectly suited for small to medium bonsai, this pot exemplifies the ideal fusion of utility and understated elegance.
