Description:
A vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Touhou (陶峰), executed in a classic oval form (楕円鉢) from finely textured unglazed clay (無釉). The rich dark-brown clay body displays subtle mineral inclusions throughout the surface and has acquired a beautiful natural patina (古色) over decades of age and use, enhancing the depth and character of the piece.
The pot features a broad rounded rim (玉縁) which projects elegantly beyond the body, creating a refined visual frame around the planting area. Beneath the rim, a subtle upper band (上帯) encircles the container before transitioning into gently curved walls that descend towards a lower basal band (胴帯). These carefully balanced proportions create a harmonious and understated silhouette, characteristic of quality Japanese bonsai pottery.
The oval form is softened by its continuous flowing lines, whilst the combination of the upper and lower banding provides structure and visual strength. The profile is elevated by integrated cut feet (切足), which provide both stability and a pleasing sense of lift without detracting from the simplicity of the overall design.
The interior retains the traditional hand-finished character associated with Japanese bonsai containers and provides generous planting space. The pot is fitted with a central drainage hole (水抜き穴), four secondary drainage holes, and four wiring holes (針金穴), allowing excellent drainage and secure anchoring of bonsai material.
The underside bears Touhou's hand-incised signature (爪描き銘) together with the distinctive carved maple leaf motif (楓葉), a characteristic feature associated with the potter's work. The textured underside and mature patina further enhance the appeal of this vintage example.
A refined and versatile bonsai container ideally suited to deciduous species, flowering varieties, and elegant conifer compositions, where its balanced proportions and quiet shibui (渋い) character can be fully appreciated.
