Description:
A vintage, hand-crafted Japanese bonsai pot (盆栽鉢 bonsai-bachi) from the renowned Yamaaki Kiln of Tokoname 常滑. This shikaku-gata (rectangular form 四角型) pot is finished in a soft cream shiro-yu (white glaze 白釉), with fine natural speckling that adds warmth and depth to its surface.
The pot features a pronounced upper lip (fuchi 縁), giving the form both strength and elegance. Along the lower edge runs a defined basal band (gedan-obi 下段帯), grounding the design and enhancing the sense of proportion.
It stands on stepped feet (kaidan-ashi 階段足), a signature Yamaaki detail that provides lightness and refinement to the overall silhouette. The interior and base remain unglazed, exposing the rich reddish-brown Tokoname shudei clay (朱泥), celebrated for its durability and breathability.
The impressed seal (inmei 印銘) of Yamaaki (山秋) and the incised signature of Kataoka Toshio (片岡俊夫) confirm its authenticity as a 3rd Generation Yamaaki creation.
A superb example of Tokoname’s Shōwa-era artistry — simple, balanced, and timeless. Ideal for both deciduous and evergreen bonsai, embodying the quiet elegance of wabi-sabi (侘寂).
External Dimensions: 31.7 × 23.7 × 7.5 cm

Yamaaki, 3rd Generation Potter Kataoka Toshio. The kiln was started by Kataoka Akitsuga and fired by three generations of potters, until it finally went 'cold' in 2011. It was the most productive bonsai pot kiln in Tokoname, fired with gas, which gives those fantastic clay colours mimicking the pots of ancient China. There are a lot of production Yamaaki pots available; those with nail-carved signatures were hand-made by the Kataoka family, and consequently, are more valuable.
