Description
A refined artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot from Tokoname 常滑, produced at the respected Koie kiln 山房鯉江製陶所 by Yamafusa’s Wife, known as Housyu Otorifune. This rectangular form features a softly rounded rim with an internal lip (内縁 uchibuchi), lending both visual depth and practical strength. The walls taper gently downward, creating a calm and balanced silhouette that is well suited to shohin and small chuhin bonsai compositions.
The pot is finished in a beautiful blue glazed surface, with subtle tonal variation and kiln character throughout. The glaze pools slightly toward the lower body, developing darker, richer hues near the corners and seams, while the upper areas remain lighter and more translucent. Over time, the surface has developed an attractive natural patina 経年変化, enhancing its depth and giving the pot a quiet, mature presence.
The pot is supported on neatly formed stepped feet 段足 (dan-ashi), carefully proportioned to lift the body just enough to create lightness and airflow beneath the vessel while maintaining excellent stability. The base is well finished, with two generous drainage holes and additional wiring holes 穴, making it fully functional for serious bonsai cultivation. The overall balance between form, glaze, and proportion creates a strong yet understated aesthetic, embodying the Tokoname tradition of uniting beauty and practicality.
This pot conveys a sense of harmony 調和 and restrained elegance, allowing the bonsai to take center stage while subtly supporting the tree’s character and “worldview” 盆栽の世界観.
