This refined rectangular bonsai pot (長方鉢 chōhō-bachi) by Koie Takehiko, working under the artist name Yamafusa (Sambō 山房), exemplifies the elegance of traditional Tokoname ware. Covered in a warm, cream-colored glaze (クリーム釉 kurīmu-yū), the surface is smooth and consistent, highlighting the crisp, architectural form beneath.
The pot features flared corners (隅入 sumi-iri) and a precisely raised mid-band (腰帯 koshi-obi) which adds structure and depth. The subtly tapered walls transition smoothly into an inset inner rim (内縁 uchibuchi), offering both visual balance and practical depth for planting. The cleanly cut feet (段足 dan-ashi) elevate the pot gracefully, lending a sense of lightness despite the pot’s solid construction.
From the underside, the pot reveals its functional craftsmanship:
• Four corner and two central holes (排水兼針金穴Haisui-ken harigane-ana) are neatly placed for optimal usability.
• The bare clay base is cleanly finished with minimal warping or excess glaze bleed.
This piece embodies the understated beauty and precision typical of high-grade Tokoname bonsai ceramics. A perfect addition to any serious collection.
The artist’s signature, 山房作 (Sambō-saku), is hand-engraved into the clay — a hallmark of authenticity and pride in craftsmanship.
