Description / 説明
A distinctive handmade Japanese bonsai pot from the Yoshimura line, attributed to the pre-Shuho period(吉村・秀峰以前), from the Tokoname ceramic tradition of Aichi Prefecture(常滑市). This piece is made in a rounded mirror-like form, maru-kagami-gata(丸鏡形), with a wide planting area, shallow profile, and elegant scalloped outline.
The pot is finished in a soft light cream glaze, awa kurimu-yu(淡クリーム釉), with natural iron speckling, tetsuten(鉄点), across the surface. The glaze has a quiet vintage character, with small dark flecks and gentle tonal variation that add depth and handmade charm. The warm brown Tokoname clay visible inside and underneath provides a pleasing contrast against the pale glazed exterior.
The rim has a softly undulating mirror-form edge, kagami-gata kuchibuchi(鏡形口縁), giving the pot a refined and decorative appearance while remaining suitable for bonsai display. The body is shallow and broad, with a rounded lip, kuchibuchi(口縁), and low profile that creates a calm, balanced presence.
The underside is supported by carved feet with stepped detail, kizami-ashi(刻み足), adding character and craftsmanship to the base. The pot includes one central drainage hole, mizunuki-ana(水抜き穴), with four additional drainage or wiring holes, harigane-ana(針金穴), making it practical for bonsai cultivation. The impressed base mark is clearly visible and supports the Yoshimura attribution.
A refined and unusual Tokoname glazed bonsai pot with a soft cream glaze, iron speckling, and elegant mirror-form outline. Its shallow, wide shape would be well suited to group plantings, flowering or fruiting species, deciduous bonsai, or display compositions where a lighter glazed container is desired.
