Product Details: NOT FOR SALE!

Region: Tokoname 常滑市

Kiln: GYOUZAN

Potter: Master and Founder of the GYOUZAN kiln - 1st Gen Nakano Yukizyou Gyouzan

An early pot design, large unglazed rectangle in a soft mokko design, hand-custom-made from one of Nakano's special purple clay, features large corner cut, a lower band, raised panels on all four sides, recessed stepped feet, with raised lip detail that is finished with a refined raised border, complementing the overall 'shibui' design.

I was surprised that hand-signed pots by Gyouzan are highly sought after. In any size, but particularly in this large size, they tend to sell for significantly more. For example, this pot has an internal chip on one of the feet, yet people continued bidding well above £1000 for this pot! Luckily, the chip is only on the inside of the foot, so it cannot be seen.

Widely recognised as the world's leading artist for unglazed wares, Nakano Yukizyou is the founder and first-generation artist of Tokoname's Gyouzan kiln.

Nail-Hand-Signed by the great Gyouzan of Tokoname.

Maximum measurements (External): 51.0 x 40.5 x 15.5 cm

Gyouzan - Yukizyou Nakano

Generally considered the best living Japanese potter for unglazed pots, Yukizyou Nakano, and his son-in-law, Yuuji Nakano, of the Gyouzan kiln,

They also produce some superb glazed pieces.

Yukizyou Nakano was born in 1940. He is referred to in Japan as 'Nakano 'Arukisan', or Nakano 'row three'.

He is a true master of his craft, and his pots display superb detail and refinement in their design and finish.

Drainage holes are often quirky in shape and arranged in patterns, and the undersides of the pots are finished with great attention to detail.
