Product description:
A vintage, artisan-crafted Japanese bonsai pot (盆栽鉢) by Akira Shouzan 昭山, 1st Generation—a respected Tokoname potter known for his precision wheel throwing and refined clay work.
This piece is a round pot (丸鉢 / maru-bachi) constructed from dense Tokoname clay (常滑土), fired to a rich, deep chocolate-brown tone. The surface shows a subtle metallic sheen typical of Shouzan’s high-quality unglazed work (焼締 / yakishime). Over time, it has developed a pleasing patina(経年の味), adding depth and character.
A defining feature is the beautifully crafted double rivet band (鋲文帯 / byō-mon-obi) around both the upper and lower sections of the pot, giving it a bold, armour-like presence reminiscent of traditional katchū 甲冑 aesthetics. The gentle curvature of the body and clean proportions create a strong sense of balance and stability(安定感).
Inside, the pot includes an internal recessed rim(内縁造り / uchibuchi), and the base is expertly finished with multiple drainage and wiring holes(水抜き穴・針金穴), showcasing functional craftsmanship. The underside bears Shouzan’s crisp tensho-style stamp(昭山印 / 篆書体), confirming authenticity.
This is an excellent example of Akira Shouzan’s round rivet-style work—ideal for powerful conifers such as 黒松 (Kuromatsu), 真柏 (Shimpaku), or rugged deciduous species.
