Description / 説明
A vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Bigei (美芸 / Hirata Atsumi 平田あつみ), one of Tokoname’s most respected and influential potters. Formed in the classical 三足丸鉢 (sansoku marubachi – tripod round bowl) style, this piece is crafted from high-quality 紫泥 (shidei / purple clay), known for its fine mineral texture and ability to develop a deep patina over time.
The pot features an internal rim (内縁 uchi-buchi) and a clean, slightly inward-curved lip (内反り縁 uchizori-buchi) that creates a powerful, balanced silhouette. The clay surface shows a lightly groggy texture, with sunameji (砂目地) stippling and natural patina (経年変化 keinen henka) accumulated over the decades — a hallmark of well-loved Tokoname ware.
Decorated in high-relief (浮彫 uchibori), the exterior displays a flowing cloud-dragon motif (雲龍文 unryūmon) that encircles the body with movement and vitality. A raised longevity character (壽 ju) appears prominently, symbolizing fortune and auspicious energy. The upper and lower edges are framed by a finely carved thunder pattern band (雷文 raimon), adding classical rhythm and elegance.
Supported by three sculptural, incised feet (彫り脚 hori-ashi) shaped with soft animal-form contours, the pot stands with stability and presence.
Inside are multiple wiring holes (針金穴) and a central drainage hole (排水穴), reflecting Bigei’s practical understanding of functional bonsai design.
This is a superb example of Bigei’s mid-career work, combining refined craftsmanship, classical motifs, and the quiet power characteristic of his purple clay pieces.

About Bigei (Hirata Atsumi, 美芸 / 平田あつみ)
Bigei, real name Hirata Atsumi, is one of Tokoname’s most respected bonsai potters. Renowned for his distinctive vermilion (朱泥 shudei) and purple clay (紫泥 shidei) unglazed pieces, he is particularly admired in the shohin bonsai world for his precision, balance, and deeply personal style.
Born in 1939, Bigei began working in ceramics in 1958. He moved to Tokoname in 1969, entering pottery without any family lineage — his father was a carpenter. He endured a demanding four-year apprenticeship, surviving only on food and shelter, before establishing his own independent kiln in 1976.
His rise to prominence is legendary: he is the only well-known Tokoname potter who built his reputation entirely from scratch — 徒手空拳 toshukūken (“with bare hands”).
After 2017, he gradually produced fewer works, creating only for himself or close acquaintances.
