Kiln Lineage: Tokoname-yaki 常滑焼
Potter: Kousen 光泉
This is a vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot crafted in Tokoname, one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns (日本六古窯). The pot features a refined oval form with a clearly defined internal rim (内縁), lending both visual strength and practical soil retention. The walls are evenly thrown, with integrated feet (一体成形の足) that sit low and stable, enhancing the grounded silhouette.
The unglazed surface reveals a warm, earthy brown tone with subtle variations from firing, characteristic of high-quality Tokoname clay (常滑土). Over decades, the clay has developed a natural patina (経年の味わい), giving the pot depth and a quiet wabi-sabi presence. The interior shows gentle throwing marks, clear evidence of hand craftsmanship rather than mass production.
The base is well executed, fitted with multiple drainage holes (排水穴) and auxiliary wiring holes (針金穴), making it fully functional for serious bonsai cultivation. The impressed square seal on the underside is consistent with Kōsen’s mark and Tokoname studio practices of the period.
Overall, the pot conveys balance (調和), restraint, and strength—qualities highly valued in classical bonsai presentation—making it particularly suitable for deciduous trees or refined evergreen compositions.

About the Potter – Kōsen 光山
Kōsen 光山 is associated with Tokoname’s post-war generation of studio potters, producing functional yet aesthetically restrained bonsai containers rooted in traditional forms. While not a mass-market name, Kōsen’s work is appreciated by collectors for its sincerity of clay, balanced proportions, and quiet elegance. Pots from this lineage emphasize usability first, combined with understated beauty, traits that align closely with classical Japanese bonsai values.
