Description:
A contemporary Japanese bonsai pot by Tani Arashiyama (谷 荒山), made in Tokoname using traditional Tokoname-yaki (常滑焼) techniques and fired in oxidation (sanka-yaki). The rectangular form is well balanced and confident, with softly rounded corners and a gently thickened rim that gives the pot a composed, architectural presence suitable for refined bonsai display.
The exterior is richly hand-carved (chokoku) with a continuous decorative program that flows around the entire body. Motifs include a dynamic dragon (ryu) emerging through stylized clouds (kumo) and waves (nami), together with finely carved woven textile patterns (ami-mon). These elements are integrated directly into the clay body, creating depth, rhythm, and visual movement when viewed from all sides.
The surface finish is natural and matte, showing subtle tonal variation from the oxidation firing, which enhances the clarity of the carving without distraction. The walls transition smoothly into molded cloud-form feet (kumo-ashi), lifting the pot lightly while reinforcing the symbolic language of the decoration. The overall impression is cohesive and intentional, with form and ornament working together as a unified composition.
The base bears the impressed Arashiyama seal together with an incised signature, confirming authorship. Drainage and wiring holes (mizunuke-ana and shibari-ana) are cleanly formed and well positioned, ensuring full functionality for practical bonsai use.
