This unglazed rectangular bonsai pot (長方鉢 - Chōhōbachi) is a masterful work in the traditional Tokoname style. Crafted by renowned potter Nakano Yukizyou Gyouzan, the piece embodies the concept of 渋い (shibui) – understated elegance with depth and refinement.
The soft, smooth corner transitions contrast gently with the crisp, structured silhouette, lending it a sense of quiet strength. The subtly flared rim (縁 - fuchi) and finely recessed, stepped feet (足 - ashi) with outward angles elevate the form, creating a refined lift that enhances its visual balance. The base features elegant 帯状装飾 (obijō sōshoku) – banding that reinforces its formal aesthetic and structure.
This pot bears one of Nakano’s distinctive seals (印 - in), confirming its authenticity and lineage.

Yukizyou Nakano was born in 1940. He is referred to in Japan as 'Nakano 'Arukisan', or Nakano 'row three'.
He is a true master of his craft, and his pots display superb detail and refinement in their design and finish.
Drainage holes are often quirky in shape and arranged in patterns, and the undersides of the pots are finished with great attention to detail.
