GYOUZAN 1st Gen (Nakano Yukizō 中野行蔵) – 常滑 Tokoname – Mokko-shape Unglazed Bonsai Pot (木瓜形 無釉)

Product
Region: Tokoname 常滑市
Kiln: Gyouzan Kiln 暁山窯
Potter: 1st Generation Gyouzan, Nakano Yukizō 中野行蔵

Description:
A vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by 1st Generation Gyouzan (Nakano Yukizō), produced in Tokoname 常滑, Japan’s most important centre for unglazed bonsai ceramics. This pot is formed in a well-balanced mokko-gata 木瓜形 shape, with softly undulating lobes that give the pot both strength and refinement. The unglazed surface 無釉 reveals a warm iron-brown tone with natural kiln variation, characteristic of high-quality Tokoname clay 常滑土 with a subtle groggy texture that adds depth and age to the surface.

The body is visually anchored by a defined lower basal band, giving the pot a powerful and grounded presence. The vertical lines of the body flow naturally downward and resolve cleanly into the stepped, incised feet 刻み足, creating a strong sense of balance and structural harmony. The feet are carefully proportioned, lifting the pot with confidence while maintaining stability and elegance.

The base is well designed with four large drainage holes 排水孔 and multiple smaller wiring holes 針金穴, ensuring excellent functionality for serious bonsai cultivation. The underside bears a clearly impressed rectangular seal 角印 reading 「中野行蔵」, confirming the work as an authentic example from the Gyouzan Kiln 暁山窯.

Overall, this bonsai pot conveys a powerful yet refined aesthetic, combining excellent clay, disciplined form, and classic Tokoname craftsmanship, making it highly suitable for quality deciduous or refined conifer bonsai.

External dimensions: 24.0 x 22.5 x 12.4cm
Internal dimensions: 20.7 x 19.7 x 9.7cm
Condition: Excellent.
