Description:

A superb artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by 2nd Generation Gyozan, Nakano Yuuji (二代 雅山 中野裕二), one of the most highly respected contemporary masters working in Tokoname. This elegant rectangular bonsai container (長方鉢) is crafted from finely refined unglazed clay (無釉), displaying a warm buff-brown tone with attractive mineral speckling throughout the clay body.

The pot features a broad projecting lip (縁) that creates a powerful visual frame around the planting area whilst maintaining a refined and balanced appearance. The gently flaring walls rise gracefully from the lower section towards the rim, creating an elegant silhouette that combines strength with understated sophistication. The clean uninterrupted profile is enhanced by a pronounced basal band (胴帯), which visually anchors the container and contributes to its harmonious proportions.

The softly rounded corners allow the rectangular form to flow naturally around the body, whilst the combination of the broad lip, flared walls, and basal band creates a distinctly shibui (渋い) aesthetic. The restrained design exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and timeless styling for which Gyozan is renowned.

The container stands on finely executed stepped incised feet (段足), providing excellent elevation and stability whilst complementing the architectural character of the pot. The feet integrate beautifully with the lower band and reinforce the strong visual balance of the design.

The interior offers generous planting space and is fitted with a central drainage hole (水抜き穴), four auxiliary drainage holes, and four wiring holes (針金穴), allowing excellent drainage and secure anchoring of bonsai material during both development and exhibition display.

The finely textured clay surface has begun to develop a pleasing natural patina (古色), enhancing the warmth and depth of the unglazed finish. This subtle maturation adds character to the container and will continue to improve with age and careful use.

The underside bears the impressed Gyozan kiln seal (雅山印), confirming the work of 2nd Generation Gyozan, Nakano Yuuji. As is typical of many later examples, the pot is seal marked only (印のみ).

An elegant exhibition-quality bonsai container ideally suited to deciduous, broadleaf, and refined conifer compositions, combining exceptional craftsmanship, functionality, and classic Tokoname aesthetics.
