A fine vintage Japanese bonsai pot by Gyozan 2nd Generation, Nakano Yuji 中野 裕二, from the renowned Tokoname ceramic tradition 常滑焼. This is a well-balanced rectangular unglazed bonsai pot, chohokei muyu bachi 長方形 無釉鉢, with a strong yet refined profile suitable for high-quality bonsai presentation.
The pot has a beautiful warm brown Tokoname clay body, with a subtly groggy surface texture and a mature aged appearance, known in Japanese as jidai-mi 時代味. Over the decades, the clay has developed a soft natural patina, giving the pot a quiet and tasteful character, shibui 渋い, which is highly appreciated by collectors and bonsai enthusiasts.
The form is elegant and purposeful, with a prominent stepped upper lip and raised rim band, giving the pot a powerful and well-defined silhouette. The gently rounded body line, softened corners, and well-executed stepped feet create a strong sense of balance and stability, while the aged clay surface gives the piece a refined vintage character. The underside shows the impressed Gyozan seal 魚山印, confirming the work as seal only 印のみ.
The base is well made with multiple drainage and wiring holes, including a central drainage hole, additional drainage holes, and smaller wire holes for securing the tree. This makes the pot both practical and visually refined, ideal for use with an established bonsai or as a collectable Tokoname pot.
