Description

A finely crafted artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Hokido (北斗), produced in Tokoname (常滑市). This elegant shohin-sized oval bonsai pot (楕円形鉢) is formed from beautifully refined white clay (白泥), displaying soft ivory tones with delicate natural shading that lend warmth and depth while preserving the understated elegance for which Tokoname pottery is renowned.

The body rises with a gentle outward flare towards a smoothly rounded lip (口縁), creating a refined and balanced silhouette. Beneath the softly curved walls, a well-defined lower basal band (胴帯) provides visual structure and anchors the composition, giving the pot a quiet yet confident presence. The restrained proportions embody a distinctly shibui (渋い) aesthetic, allowing the container to enhance rather than compete with the bonsai it displays.

The refined white clay exhibits a smooth satin texture with subtle tonal variation across the surface. The natural warmth of the clay is complemented by the simplicity of the form, creating an elegant container that will continue to mature gracefully as it develops an increasingly attractive patina (景色) over the years through careful cultivation.

The pot stands on finely executed recessed half-moon feet, carefully formed beneath the lower basal band (胴帯) and following the graceful oval silhouette of the container. Their subtle crescent profile provides excellent stability while visually lifting the pot from the display surface, creating a pleasing sense of lightness without interrupting the flowing lines of the design. This understated foot treatment reflects the refined craftsmanship associated with Hokido's work.

The interior is fitted with one central drainage hole (水抜き穴) together with two wiring holes (針金穴), providing excellent drainage and secure anchoring for bonsai. The underside bears the crisp, impressed Hokido seal (落款), confirming the authenticity of the workshop.
