A vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot (和鉢 wabachi) originating from Tokoname 常滑, crafted with a beautifully tactile unglazed, sandy-grogged clay body (砂気のある土肌).
The bowl exhibits a low, wide profile with a gently rounded silhouette, creating a sense of harmony and understated elegance (落ち着いた佇まい).
Form & Construction – 形と意匠
Round form – 丸鉢 (marubachi) with a softly curving internal rim – 内縁 (naien).
The exterior surface displays a textured, hammered-like pattern (槌目風の質感), giving depth and character to the clay.
Three incised, sculpted feet – 刻み足 / 彫り足 rise subtly from the base, adding stability while maintaining a light, floating appearance (浮いたような印象).
The pot has developed a rich natural patina – 経年の味わい over the decades, especially visible in the warm brown tone of the clay (温かみのある土色).
Base Characteristics – 底の特徴
The underside features:
Three large drainage holes – 水抜き穴 (mizunuki-ana)
Three wiring holes – 針金穴 (harigane-ana)
Hand-turned spiral tooling marks – ロクロ目 clearly visible, confirming traditional wheelwork.
A crisp potter’s mark – 印 / 落款 (rakkann) is stamped on the base, representing the artisan’s identity and pride in craftsmanship.
The balance between the subtle rim, robust body, and carved feet creates a calm yet powerful presence (静けさと力強さの調和).
This pot is ideal for displaying a refined deciduous or evergreen tree where understated elegance enhances the beauty of the planting.
