Description:

A vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Izumi-ya Matsushita Masuo 泉屋 松下益夫, also known as Sengo / Zenigo 泉古, from Tokoname 常滑. This is a handmade rectangular unglazed bonsai pot 手造り長方無釉鉢 with a strong classical form, flared corners, and incised cloud-style feet.

The pot has a powerful rectangular body 長方鉢 with softly rounded walls and well-defined flared corners 隅張り. The upper rim is broad and slightly flared, forming a strong projecting lip 口縁 that frames the planting area with authority. The profile has a smooth, gently swelling body line, giving the pot both strength and elegance.

The clay has an excellent warm reddish-brown tone with darker areas of natural ageing and use. The unglazed surface 無釉肌 shows attractive groggy texture 荒土調 with fine speckling throughout, giving the pot a rustic and highly tactile Tokoname character. The surface has developed a mature patina 時代感 over the years, especially visible around the rim, inner basin, and underside, adding depth and character to the piece.

The pot is raised on decorative incised cloud feet 雲足 / 彫り足, carefully shaped into the corners. These feet add movement and refinement while giving the heavy rectangular body a lifted and balanced appearance. The contrast between the strong flared rectangular form and the carved cloud feet creates a powerful sense of stability and presence.

The interior has a practical planting depth with an internal rim and a strong central basin suitable for bonsai cultivation. The base includes drainage holes 水抜き穴 and wiring holes 針金穴, allowing for secure planting and wiring. The underside is neatly finished and carries the impressed seal 印, confirming the attribution to Izumi-ya / Matsushita Masuo 泉屋 松下益夫.

A very attractive Tokoname bonsai pot with excellent proportions, strong handmade character, warm unglazed clay, flared corners, and finely incised cloud feet. Its aged surface, strong body line, and practical construction make it suitable for a refined bonsai composition as well as for collectors of Tokoname ware 常滑焼.
