Description:
A vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by 2nd Generation Hisada Keizan (二代 久田桂山) of the renowned Hisada Kiln (久田窯), Tokoname. This elegant square bonsai container (正方鉢) is crafted from finely textured unglazed clay (無釉), displaying a warm natural tone with subtle mineral character throughout the surface.
The pot exhibits a refined and harmonious profile, with the walls flaring gracefully from the stepped feet towards the rim, creating a strong sense of movement and balance. The raised lip is finished with a refined raised border, giving the pot a quiet, understated shibui (渋い) character. The gently curved corners soften the overall geometry and contribute to the pot’s elegant appearance.
A pronounced lower basal band (胴帯) defines the lower section of the container before transitioning into the distinctive stepped feet. These carefully executed feet flare outward from the body and provide both visual stability and excellent elevation, giving the pot a poised and balanced stance suitable for exhibition-quality bonsai.
The interior is generously proportioned and features a central drainage hole (水抜き穴) together with four wiring holes (針金穴), allowing secure anchoring of the tree during both development and display. The clean internal lines and well-considered proportions demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Hisada family tradition.
The clay has begun to acquire a pleasing natural patina (古色), enhancing the depth and character of the surface. This subtle maturation of the clay body complements the understated elegance of the design and will continue to improve with age and careful use.
The underside bears both the impressed kiln seal and the finely hand-carved signature (爪描き銘) of Keizan, confirming the work as that of 2nd Generation Hisada Keizan, Hisada Sadao (久田貞雄).
