Description

This is a vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot (日本製盆栽鉢) produced in Tokoname by the second-generation master Hisada Keizan. The pot presents a refined oval to rounded rectangular silhouette with gently tapering walls and a calm, well-balanced profile (安定感のある造形).

The rim is understated and precisely formed, with a subtle internal return (内縁) that strengthens the structure while maintaining visual lightness. The exterior surface is smooth and even, allowing the form and clay body to speak for themselves.

The unglazed surface displays a fine, natural texture characteristic of high-quality Tokoname clay. Fired to a soft grey-beige tone, the surface has developed a pleasing, natural patina over time (経年変化), adding depth and warmth while preserving the original material character.

The feet are neatly cut and well integrated (切足), providing stability without interrupting the overall harmony of the design. The pot sits with quiet confidence and balance, suitable for both formal and informal bonsai compositions.

The interior is carefully finished and practical, with multiple drainage and wiring holes (排水穴・針金穴) arranged to ensure excellent horticultural performance and secure tie-down.

Overall, this container reflects Keizan’s refined aesthetic: understated, functional, and timeless. It is particularly well suited to large deciduous bonsai or mature conifers, where the pot supports the tree without drawing attention away from it.
