Description / 説明:

A vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot(日本製・職人作の盆栽鉢 / 和鉢)by KISEN – Kinsen Ikkodou 喜泉 壱光堂, produced in the historic ceramic centre of Tokoname 常滑市, Aichi Prefecture 愛知県.

This substantial rectangular bonsai pot(長方鉢 – choho-bachi) has a strong architectural form, combining sharply defined corners, gently flaring walls(外反りの胴), a prominent projecting upper lip(外縁 – soto-beri), a refined raised border(縁取り – fuchidori), a clearly defined lower basal band(腰帯 – koshi-obi)and four recessed cut corner feet(切足 – kiri-ashi).

The upper profile is particularly refined. A pronounced outward-projecting lip(外縁 – soto-beri) extends beyond the body and is finished along its outermost edge with a delicate raised border(縁取り – fuchidori). This subtle raised line creates a crisp finishing detail around the entire perimeter and adds refinement to the otherwise substantial rectangular form.

Immediately beneath the lip, the walls flare gently outward(外反り), creating an elegant transition between the body(胴 – do)and the wider upper profile. This combination gives the pot considerable visual strength while retaining the restrained character associated with traditional Japanese bonsai containers(和鉢).

The pot has strongly defined, sharp rectangular corners(角の立った長方形), creating a crisp and architectural silhouette. These angular corners work particularly well with the broad projecting lip and its fine raised border, giving the vessel a powerful but controlled sense of 力強さ(chikarazuyosa – strength) and 品格(hinkaku – dignity).

Running around the lower section is a clearly defined basal band(腰帯 – koshi-obi). This horizontal detail creates a strong visual transition between the main body and the base, grounding the pot and contributing to its excellent 安定感(anteikan – stability and balance).

The pot is supported by four recessed cut corner feet(四方切足). These are not stepped feet; each foot is cut and positioned directly beneath the corresponding corner, following the geometry of the rectangular form. Their low, broad construction keeps them visually discreet while providing a stable and substantial stance.

The unglazed clay(無釉土 – muyu-tsuchi)has a warm chocolate-brown colouration (茶褐色), with a fine granular surface texture that gives the pot excellent 土味(tsuchi-aji – character of the clay). Subtle tonal variation across the fired surface adds depth while preserving the restrained Japanese aesthetic of 渋み(shibumi – understated refinement).

Internally, the pot provides a generous and practical planting area(植込部), with a deep profile suitable for an established bonsai requiring both root volume and visual strength.

The base incorporates two substantial drainage holes(排水穴 – haisui-ana) together with four smaller wiring holes(針金穴 – harigane-ana), carefully positioned to provide effective drainage(排水性)and secure anchoring of the bonsai(樹木固定). This practical arrangement reflects the functional craftsmanship expected of a substantial Tokoname container.

The underside(鉢底 – hachizoko)carries a clearly impressed square maker's seal(角印 – kakuin), identifying the work as KISEN / Kinsen Ikkodou 喜泉 壱光堂. The crisp impressed mark(押印)adds an important point of authenticity and collector interest(収集価値).

Overall, this is a beautifully proportioned large Tokoname bonsai pot combining the strength of a traditional 長方鉢, the elegance of its flared walls(外反り), the refined projecting 外縁 with delicate 縁取り, the grounding effect of the 腰帯, and the architectural precision of the recessed 切足.

The result is a pot with an excellent sense of 造形美(zokei-bi – beauty of form), 実用性(jitsuyosei – functionality), 調和(chowa – harmony) and 安定感(anteikan).

Its strong rectangular form and understated unglazed clay would pair particularly well with mature conifers such as Japanese Black Pine(黒松 – kuromatsu), Japanese White Pine(五葉松 – goyomatsu), or Shimpaku Juniper(真柏 – shimpaku), as well as substantial deciduous bonsai(雑木盆栽)requiring a strong but restrained container.
