Description
This is a refined vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot (古作盆栽鉢) from Tokoname, formed in an iron-rich, lightly grogged clay (砂気のある常滑土). The pot presents a calm, well-balanced round form with gently tapering walls and a clearly defined internal rim (内縁), giving the piece a strong yet understated presence (静かな力強さ).
The exterior is distinguished by two separate decorative studded bands: an upper band directly beneath the rim and a lower basal band above the foot, both adorned with evenly spaced applied studs (鋲打ち装飾). This dual-band composition creates visual rhythm and reinforces the pot’s horizontal balance without distracting from the overall harmony of the form.
The base features three recessed round feet (三つの丸沈み足), carefully integrated into the underside. These incised feet lift the pot subtly while maintaining a low, grounded stance—an elegant and functional solution typical of well-considered Tokoname work.
The unglazed surface has developed a rich, natural patina (経年による土味の深まり) over time, softening the clay’s warm brown tones and enhancing its tactile quality. The underside bears a clearly impressed 光山 (Kōsen) seal, confirming the maker.
Drainage and wiring are well addressed with two drainage holes (排水穴) and one wiring hole (針金穴), making the pot fully suitable for serious bonsai cultivation
