This outstanding rectangular bonsai pot by Reiho (片岡勝志), a leading figure in modern Tokoname pottery, embodies a sense of formal strength, refinement, and visual lift. Crafted at the renowned Seizan Kiln (誠山窯), the pot is finished in a luxurious deep cobalt blue glaze (瑠璃釉, ruriyu) — rich in depth, with subtle tonal variation that responds beautifully to light.
The pot’s form features gently flared walls with a smooth raised lip (縁, fuchi), giving the outline a crisp yet elegant structure. Just inside the rim is a subtle internal ledge or inset (内縁) — a rarely noticed but deliberate design feature that contributes to visual clarity and ease of planting.
At the base, a finely carved band encircles the lower wall, adding architectural rhythm and enhancing the pot’s symmetry. The vessel is supported by stepped feet (段足, dan-ashi), which are slightly angled outward and shaped with a soft cloud-like profile (雲足, kumozoku). These feet not only lift the pot physically but also elevate it visually, emphasizing strength, formality, and flow.
The base is stamped with Reiho’s personal seal (落款), confirming its authenticity.
