I know that perhaps I paid far too much for this pot? but first of all, I bought it for personal use, not for resale. today 4th of Sep 2025 I received one of many books in Japanese about all the potters. As I just took the photo of a second pot from Sampou, I realised that I have also paid more than I thought I would. his history below, in short this pot and the other pot that I have are first of all hand made, secondly there is a high provability that they where made-to-order! hence why someone would bid with me so high for these two pots. Otherwise, I see no other reason.

Handcrafted in Japan by Kasuga Sanpou (春日三峰, real name Saida Miyozō 斎田三四三), this unglazed rectangular bonsai pot showcases the timeless elegance of traditional Japanese ceramics. The warm brown clay has developed a rich patina (古色, koshoku) over time, enhancing its natural surface with subtle wabi-sabi (侘び寂び) character.

A finely carved bamboo-motif band (竹の飾り帯, take no kazari-obi) encircles the midsection, accented with tied-knot details (締め飾り, shimekazari), offering a quiet decorative touch while maintaining classical restraint. The form features an internal rim (内縁, naien) for added strength and proportion, resting on recessed straight feet (切足, kiri-ashi) that provide stability and proper drainage for healthy root development.

Its generous size makes it especially well-suited for medium to larger bonsai, including pines, junipers, and deciduous species. The understated form harmonises beautifully with powerful trees, allowing the bonsai itself to remain the focal point while the pot offers dignified support.

Kasuga Sanpou’s works are relatively rare and are sought after for their refined craftsmanship, balanced proportions, and surfaces that mature gracefully over time. This piece represents the best of his artistry: subtle decoration, quiet strength, and a form steeped in Japanese tradition.

The underside bears the incised signature 春日三峰造 ("Made by Kasuga Sanpou"), marking it as an authentic creation of Saida Miyozō.
