Potter: 2nd Gen Kataoka Sadamitsu (KOSHOUSEN)
A beautifully crafted, rare, and striking round bonsai pot by Koshosen (小松泉), this piece is an exceptional example of traditional Japanese bonsai ceramics.
The unglazed clay body features a warm, earthy brown tone with a subtle natural sheen. The pot is adorned with applied studded bands along both the upper and lower rims — a hallmark of Koshosen’s innovative yet balanced design language, evoking traditional armour motifs while enhancing visual rhythm and tactile presence.
With the Yamaaki kiln no longer in production since the early 2000s, pieces from the 3rd generation are increasingly sought-after by collectors. This pot offers not only utility but also historical and artistic value — a fine addition to any serious bonsai collection.

Yamaaki is a renowned family of bonsai pot makers from Tokoname, Japan.
Sadamitsu Kataoka, in Showa 36 (1961), after graduating from high school in Tokoname's ceramics section, joined SA Yamaaki (Yamaaki Seitoujo - literally, a factory that manufactures ceramic Yamaaki) and continued studying under his father's supervision. Shousen (Kataoka Akiji). From Showa 60 (1985), he has used the seal "Koshousen (小松泉)" and continues to use it today.
There are many production Yamaaki pots available; those with nail-carved signatures were handmade by the Kataoka family and are consequently more valuable.
