Shape (
): Cascade-style Round Pot (懸崖鉢・丸型)
External Dimensions (
外寸): 20.4 cm(幅)× 9.0 cm(高さ)

This is a rare early piece by GYOUZAN 初代 (Nakano Yukizyou / 中野行山), reflecting a formative period in the master’s career. The pot has a tapered round form (台形円鉢 – taikei en-bachi) with a deep profile, making it ideally suited for cascade (懸崖) and semi-cascade (半懸崖) bonsai styles.

It features a striking dual band of decorative rivets (鋲装飾 – byō sōshoku) encircling the body — a design rarely seen in later Gyouzan works. These hand-applied studs add a sense of rugged, almost architectural strength while maintaining classic balance. The soft, rounded lip ( – fuchi) enhances the silhouette.

Crafted from unglazed red-brown groggy Tokoname clay (無釉赤茶の荒土), it offers excellent breathability and drainage. The pot stands on three recessed feet (三つ足 – mittsu ashi), providing stability and elevation.

Condition (状態): Very Good / 良好 – There is a professionally repaired chip on the edge of one leg.

Collectors Note: /
Early works by Gyouzan (暁山) have become increasingly scarce on the market, particularly examples that combine strong form, clean execution, and a rich sense of 土味 (tsuchi-aji) such as this piece. The harmonious balance of proportion, the carefully executed feet (爪描き脚), and the use of classic Tokoname clay exemplify the refined craftsmanship characteristic of first-generation Gyouzan works.

Pieces from this early period are especially valued for their understated elegance (控えめな美) and structural confidence, qualities that have become hallmarks of Nakano Yukizyous legacy. This pot embodies the timeless functionality and quiet sophistication that continue to make early Gyouzan ceramics highly sought after by serious collectors and bonsai practitioners worldwide.
