This is a finely crafted, vintage Japanese bonsai pot by the esteemed potter Heian Kosen 平安香山, known for his refined forms, elegant proportions, and mastery of traditional glaze techniques. The piece presents a soft oval silhouette with a gently rolled lip, creating a sense of kibishii baraansu 厳しいバランス — a firm and harmonious equilibrium. The pot features subtle raised “ear” accents on the longer sides, a classical detail often associated with refined Kyoto-style workmanship.

The exterior glaze is a beautiful hakuji kannyū 白磁貫入 crackled white, full of fine crazing lines that enrich the character of the pot. Over time the surface has developed a warm patina, nensei no aji 年成の味, enhancing the depth and visual softness of the glaze. The clay body underneath shows a pleasantly groggy texture, contributing to its tactile charm and anchoring the pot’s traditional feel.

Inside the rim, the pot is smoothly finished, and the base presents multiple water and wiring holes, carefully placed with functional precision. The underside carries Kosen’s impressed seal, rendered in a stylized tensho script, a signature feature of his workshop.

External dimensions: 13.3 × 11.6 × 3.5 cm
Internal dimensions: 11.2 × 10.1 × 2.3 cm

Condition: Excellent. The glaze, patina, and structural integrity remain beautifully preserved.

About the Potter: (for Collectors):

Heian Kōsen 平安香山 was a Kyoto-based potter working within the Kyō-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki tradition, a lineage celebrated for refinement, precision, and historical depth. While Kyoto is best known for tea ceramics, select potters such as Kōsen produced high-quality bonsai ware that emphasized proportion, clay character, and subtle surface treatment. Bonsai pots bearing the Heian Kōsen mark are valued for their understated sophistication, mature patina, and strong yet quiet forms, appealing to collectors who prioritize authenticity, balance, and classical Japanese aesthetics.
