Description / 説明:
A substantial contemporary artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot 盆栽鉢 by REIHO 礼峰 (Kataoka Katsushi 片岡勝志) of Tokoname 常滑市, finished in a striking deep blue glaze 濃青釉. Measuring over 50cm in length, this impressive rectangular container combines strong architectural proportions with a rich, beautifully controlled glaze.
The pot is formed in a classical rectangular form (長方鉢) with distinctive flared and shaped corners 隅張り, giving the otherwise restrained body a powerful architectural character. The corner treatment continues naturally from the upper profile through the walls and into the feet, producing a cohesive and carefully considered silhouette.
The upper opening incorporates a well-defined internal rim (内縁 / uchi-en), neatly framing the planting area and adding structural definition to the substantial rectangular form.
The glaze is particularly attractive, displaying a rich deep blue (濃青) with subtle tonal variation across the surface. Under changing light, the glaze reveals fine mottling and areas of deeper indigo and navy, producing considerable depth without distracting from the clean geometry of the pot.
The vessel stands on four carefully executed incised, angled-cut feet (刻み切足). The cuts are deliberately angled rather than vertical, and each foot follows the distinctive geometry of the flared corners. This continuation of the corner treatment into the feet gives the pot a strong sense of chowa (調和) and provides a broad, stable stance appropriate to a container of this size.
The underside exposes the finely prepared natural clay body and carries the rectangular REIHO 礼峰 seal (落款). Its carefully finished construction reflects the attention given to both the visible and functional aspects of the vessel.
The base incorporates six functional drain/wiring holes (排水・針金穴), positioned to provide effective drainage and multiple anchoring points for securely fixing the root mass of a substantial bonsai.
The combination of its generous dimensions, strong Chohobachi (長方鉢) form, distinctive sumibari (隅張り) corners, angled kiri-ashi (切足) and richly developed deep blue glaze gives this pot considerable presence while maintaining the disciplined simplicity associated with quality contemporary Tokoname bonsai ceramics.

Collector’s Note / コレクターズノート:
This substantial contemporary REIHO 礼峰 container is particularly appealing for the relationship between its architectural form and its carefully considered foot construction. At 50.8cm, it has the scale and planting capacity required for a mature bonsai while retaining clean, disciplined proportions.
The distinctive flared corner treatment 隅張り is carried through into the four incised angled-cut feet (刻み切足), creating continuity from the body to the base and giving the pot a particularly resolved appearance from every viewing angle. This attention to structural detail is an important feature for collectors of high-quality contemporary Tokoname pottery.
The rich deep blue glaze (濃青釉) gives the pot considerable visual depth, while the large planting area and six functional drain/wiring holes (排水・針金穴) make it equally accomplished as a practical bonsai container. Combined with the REIHO seal and substantial dimensions, this is a strong contemporary example for both serious cultivation and a collection of modern Japanese bonsai ceramics.
