This unglazed rectangular bonsai pot (長方鉢 - Chōhōbachi) is a distinguished example of traditional Tokoname craftsmanship, created by the esteemed potter Nakano Yukizyou Gyouzan. It embodies the concept of 渋い (shibui) – an aesthetic characterised by understated elegance, simplicity, and depth, which is a hallmark of the Tokoname style.
The pot features ** recessed corners (くぼみ隅 - kubomi sumi)**, which give it a refined and angular appearance. This recessed design enhances the minimalist yet sophisticated profile, exuding a quiet strength and sense of balance. The edges transition smoothly into the body, contributing to the pot’s overall sense of harmony and tranquillity.
The cloud-shaped feet (雲脚 - unkyaku) are a key feature of this pot, slightly lifting it off the surface. These feet, with their subtle outward angles, provide both functional stability and graceful elevation. The four drainage holes (排水穴 - haisui ana) ensure optimal bonsai health, allowing for proper water flow and drainage.
On the underside, it bears one of Nakano’s distinctive seals (印 - in). The seal represents the lineage of the potter, further solidifying the piece’s prestige and quality.
