This exquisite medium bonsai pot is handcrafted by the esteemed Japanese potter Terahata Mazan, also known as Mayama Mazan, renowned for his masterful balance of form, function, and traditional aesthetics.
The pot features a broad rectangular (chōhō-gata) form with gently flared walls, a wide beveled lip (fukuro-mimi style), a basal band, and refined stepped corners that flow into strong stepped feet—lending a sense of visual lightness despite its generous proportions.
The unglazed surface subtly captures light, revealing tonal shifts and the beginning of a natural patina, enhancing contrast when paired with planted compositions.
Ideal for medium to large bonsai, this piece is both functional and deeply aesthetic.

About the Artist and Kiln:
The Terahata family of Seto, particularly founder Mayama Mazan (also recognized as Terahata Mazan), has long held a prominent position in the world of bonsai pottery. Their kiln—located in Seto, one of Japan’s revered “Six Ancient Kilns”—produces works that represent a refined union of utility and artistry.
Mayama Mazan’s legacy is defined by his innovative integration of traditional Seto ceramic techniques with elegant forms and finishes designed to harmonize with bonsai aesthetics. These pots are not merely containers but intended as visual companions to the living trees they hold.
Today, the kiln’s reputation is carried on by Satomi Terahata (also known as Satomi Mazan), who maintains the family’s dedication to traditional craftsmanship while introducing her own refined stylistic sensibility.
