Description
A vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot(日本製・職人作り盆栽鉢), crafted in the Koishiwara region of Fukuoka, known for its rustic yet refined mingei pottery traditions.
This piece is a rectangular, cloud-footed (雲足 un-soku) pot with a beautifully executed thin celadon-green glaze(淡青釉 tanseiyū) that softly transitions over the crisp rim and upper band. The glaze application is delicate and even, giving the pot an elegant, understated presence typical of Kyushu ceramic aesthetics.
The form is mid-cut, straight-walled (直壁 chokkabe) with a subtle internal rim(内縁 naien), creating a strong sense of structure and balance. The rounded lip(口縁 kōen) adds refinement, while the shallow lower body displays the warm tone of the clay beneath, enhanced by age-developed patina(古色 koshoku).
The pot sits on four softly carved incised cloud feet(雲形削り足), providing a grounded yet gentle stance. These feet, combined with the lightly stepped contour at the base, give the pot a graceful lift ideal for shohin display.
The interior shows traditional twin drainage/wire holes(排水穴・針金穴), standard for hand-crafted bonsai containers. The clay body is lightly groggy, characteristic of Koishiwara stoneware, providing both durability and aesthetic texture.
This pot reflects the quiet craftsmanship of Koishiwara artisans—kilns known more for local functional wares than for commercial bonsai production. Their bonsai pieces are small-batch, workshop-level works prized by collectors for their rarity and regional character.
External Dimensions: 13.2 × 10.5 × 4.8 cm
Internal Dimensions: 11.0 × 8.3 × 3.7 cm
Condition: Excellent(極上品) – No chips, cracks, or repair. Mature surface character and stable glaze.
About the Potter (Collector-oriented Note)
While the exact kiln name is not known, the impressed seal conforms to traditional Koishiwara-yaki(小石原焼) marking practices. Many small family kilns in this region carve their own stamps in a rustic tensho-style seal(篆書印), making each artisan’s work subtle but unique.
Because Koishiwara is not a major bonsai-pot center like Tokoname, its bonsai pieces are comparatively rare and sought after by connoisseurs. These pots often come from multi-generation utilitarian potteries where an individual craftsman occasionally produced small batches for bonsai growers, making them collectible regional works with genuine folk-craft heritage(民芸的価値).
This pot embodies that tradition—simple, honest, beautifully formed, and elevated by decades of quiet aging.
