Description / 説明
A large vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot (日本手造り盆栽鉢) by the late Shozan 松山 – Watanabe Shozo 渡辺正三, from Tokoname 常滑市.
This substantial 44.0cm oval pot(大判楕円鉢) has a broad, low and beautifully restrained silhouette. The walls open gently outward (外開き), creating a clean continuous oval profile with excellent 均衡(kinko), 調和(chowa) and 安定感(anteikan).
The unglazed Tokoname clay (常滑無釉土) has a subdued warm brown to brown-grey tone with a fine, naturally textured surface. Subtle tonal variation gives the clay attractive 土味(tsuchi-aji), together with mature 経年変化 and natural 景色.
The pot is supported by two broad integrated half-moon feet(二足・半月形一体足), positioned at the opposing ends of the oval. Each foot follows the curvature of the vessel, creating a low, elegant stance and a beautifully continuous transition between 鉢身(pot body) and 足(feet).
The overall character is quiet and refined, with a strong sense of 渋み(shibumi), 品格(hinkaku) and 用の美(yo-no-bi).
The base incorporates three principal drainage holes(三ヶ所の排水穴) together with two smaller wiring holes(二ヶ所の針金穴), providing effective 排水 and secure 針金固定.
The underside bears the subtle hand-incised Shozan signature (松山手彫り銘).

About the Potter / 作家について
The late Shozan 松山 – Watanabe Shozo 渡辺正三 was a respected Tokoname bonsai-pot maker associated with traditional forms and larger bonsai containers.
Shozan was also the father and teacher of Ikko 一洸 – Watanabe Kazuhiro 渡邉一弘, placing him within an important Watanabe lineage of Tokoname bonsai ceramics(常滑盆栽鉢).
His surviving pots are appreciated for their restrained proportions, carefully selected clay and strong sense of 用の美.
Collector's Note / コレクターズノート
A particularly elegant large-format Shozan 松山 example, combining a broad 楕円鉢 silhouette, gently 外開き walls, warm 常滑無釉土, and distinctive 二足・半月形一体足.
The low integrated half-moon feet give the pot an especially calm and refined stance, while the subtle 松山手彫り銘 adds further collector interest.
At 44.0cm, this is a substantial and very usable vintage Tokoname pot with excellent 土味・渋み・品格.
