A distinctive vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot（和鉢 – wabachi）by the highly regarded Syu-Zan（舟山）, Suzuki Shinji（鈴木伸二）, produced in Togo, Aichi Prefecture（愛知県東郷）. The pot is formed as a low and powerful round drum-shaped vessel（丸太鼓形鉢 – maru taiko-gata bachi）, displaying excellent proportion and a strong sense of 安定感（anteikan – stability）.

The exterior decoration reinforces the traditional drum-form concept（太鼓形 – taiko-gata）. Around the body, Syu-Zan has applied a series of raised clay studs or bosses（鋲 – byo）together with circular impressions, recalling the visible fastenings associated with traditional Japanese taiko drums. Their deliberately irregular, hand-worked execution gives the decoration an expressive quality while retaining a clear visual reference to the drum form from which the 太鼓形 bonsai-pot tradition takes its name.

Rather than appearing mechanically repetitive, the 鋲飾り（byo-kazari – stud decoration） varies subtly in size, spacing and form. This gives the pot a lively sense of 手仕事（teshigoto – hand workmanship） and adds individuality to what is otherwise a disciplined circular form.

Beneath this decoration, the lower body is defined by a clearly indented basal band（凹腰帯 – recessed koshi-obi）. The band is set inward from the main body, creating a strong horizontal recess around the circumference and a refined visual transition between the decorated body（胴 – do）and the base.

The pot is supported by three recessed cut feet（切足 – kiri-ashi）, equally positioned around the circular base. Each foot is cut inward and follows the curvature of the round silhouette, keeping the support structure visually discreet while giving the vessel the slight elevation needed for practical use and preserving its compact, grounded stance.

The unglazed clay（無釉土 – muyu-tsuchi）has fired to a rich dark brown-grey tone with subtle metallic and purplish undertones. Its naturally textured surface displays excellent 土味（tsuchi-aji – clay character）, with gentle firing variation and age-related changes contributing to the pot’s quiet visual depth.

The surface has also developed attractive 経年の味わい（keinen no aji – character acquired through age） and natural 景色（keshiki）, giving the pot the subdued maturity associated with older Japanese bonsai ceramics.

The interior（鉢内 – hachinai）contains three round drainage holes（水抜き穴 – mizunuki-ana） together with a distinctive central double-lobed opening suitable for wiring and anchoring. This provides practical drainage and secure placement of the tree while maintaining the symmetry of the circular form.

The underside（鉢底 – hachizoko）bears a clearly impressed square 舟山 seal（舟山印）, confirming the work of Syu-Zan.

The combination of the powerful 丸太鼓形, drum-inspired 鋲飾り, indented 凹腰帯, three recessed 切足, mature unglazed clay and strong 土味 gives this pot a particularly compelling balance of 造形美（zokei-bi – beauty of form）, 実用性（jitsuyosei – practical function） and 渋み（shibumi – understated refinement）.

About the Potter / 作家について – Syu-Zan 舟山, Suzuki Shinji 鈴木伸二

Suzuki Shinji（鈴木伸二）, artist name Syu-Zan（舟山）, 1928–1988, was an important independent Japanese bonsai-pot maker（盆栽鉢作家）whose relatively short professional career produced a distinctive and now highly collectable body of work.

Born in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture（三重県津市）in 1928, Suzuki initially pursued a career in banking. In 1971, at the age of 43, he left banking and devoted himself fully to ceramics, establishing his workshop in Togo, Aichi Prefecture（愛知県東郷）.

Syu-Zan developed a particular fascination with classical Chinese bonsai containers（中国古鉢 – Chugoku kobachi）, especially the historic ceramic traditions associated with Yixing（宜興）. His work drew upon the proportions, clay surfaces and restrained strength of antique Chinese vessels while interpreting them through a distinctly Japanese aesthetic.

Clay was fundamental to his approach. Syu-Zan experimented with blended clay bodies, including Chinese and Japanese materials, in pursuit of the colour, texture and natural surface quality found in antique containers. This resulted in pots admired for their distinctive 土味（tsuchi-aji）, subtle firing variation and their ability to develop increasingly attractive 景色（keshiki） through age and cultivation.

His pots have been associated with important Japanese bonsai exhibition displays, including Kokufu-ten（国風展）, and his work is now appreciated by collectors for its individuality, craftsmanship and historical position within modern Japanese bonsai ceramics.

His influence continued through his apprentice Sen-Syu（仙舟）, whose work carried forward elements of Syu-Zan's approach to clay and classical bonsai-pot design.

Collector's Note / コレクターズノート

This 26.0cm round drum pot（丸太鼓形鉢） is a particularly characterful example of Syu-Zan's more decorative work.

The relationship between form and decoration is especially noteworthy. This is not simply a round pot decorated with arbitrary studs: the low cylindrical body, 太鼓形 proportions, indented 凹腰帯, three recessed cut feet（切足）and prominent 鋲（byo） decoration collectively reinforce the visual language of the traditional Japanese drum.

The hand-applied studs give Syu-Zan's interpretation considerably more individuality than the regular, mechanically spaced rivet decoration seen on many conventional drum-form bonsai pots. Their irregularity preserves a strong sense of 手仕事（teshigoto） and makes the pot feel expressive without becoming overly decorative.

The lower construction is equally refined. The indented basal band（凹腰帯） creates depth and structure, while the three recessed cut feet（切足） follow the circular silhouette closely, allowing the body to remain visually dominant.

The mature dark 無釉（muyu） clay, strong 土味（tsuchi-aji）, naturally developed 景色（keshiki）, drum-inspired 鋲飾り（byo-kazari） and impressed 舟山印 combine to give this piece considerable individuality and collector appeal.

It is an excellent example of the balance between traditional form（伝統的な形）, hand craftsmanship（手仕事）, practical function（実用性） and understated beauty（渋み） that makes Syu-Zan's work so compelling to collectors.
