Description:
A vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot (日本製盆栽鉢), crafted by the respected Aichi-based potter Syu-Zan (舟山). This is a round drum-shaped form (太鼓形 / taiko-gata), exhibiting strong presence and excellent proportional balance.
The pot features a subtly stepped external profile with a pronounced mid-to-lower decorative band adorned with applied raised studs (tsubu kazari), giving both visual texture and rhythmic movement around the body. The rim is internally defined (uchi-fuchi / 内縁), lending a clean and powerful silhouette while maintaining elegance.
The clay body shows a refined, slightly grogged texture (aratsuchi / 荒土), fired to a subdued metallic brown-grey tone. Over time, the surface has developed a beautiful natural patina (keika no patina / 経過の味わい), enhancing depth and character—highly desirable in aged bonsai ceramics.
The base is well finished with neatly formed feet (ashi / 足) and displays excellent craftsmanship. The underside bears the impressed square seal reading 「舟山」(Syu-Zan), confirming authorship. The pot includes three drainage holes and a central clover-shaped wiring aperture (hari-ana / 針穴), offering both practical function and traditional aesthetic balance.
