Product Details:

Region: Aichi Prefecture 愛知県
Kiln / Workshop Location: Tōgō Ward 東郷町
Potter: Syu-Zan (舟山), real name Suzuki Shinji 鈴木伸二

A vintage, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by the renowned independent Aichi craftsman Syu-Zan (舟山). The oval form is harmonious and understated, expressing a refined shibui (渋い) aesthetic. The pot features a subtly raised lip finished with a refined raised border (上縁の立ち上がり装飾), adding quiet strength without overpowering the elegant silhouette.

The warm brown unglazed clay (無釉土) carries a lightly groggy texture and natural tonal depth—distinctive of Syu-Zan’s clay blends combining Japanese and imported Chinese material. With age, the surface has developed a tasteful, organic patina (景色 / けしき). A clearly defined basal band (腰帯 / こしおび) runs above the foot, reinforcing the form and giving the pot a grounded, composed presence.

The feet are cut (切足 / きりあし) but shaped with Syu-Zans characteristic half-moon curvature (半月形の切足) across each end, softening the overall stance and creating a gentle visual flow beneath the pot. Inside, drainage and wiring holes are arranged with precise, practical functionality.

This pot carries three authentic Syu-Zan markings:
the main impressed base seal 「舟山製」, plus two small hand-stamped marks on the front and back—an uncommon and highly desirable feature confirming its fully handmade production.

External dimensions: 43.5 × 32.9 × 7.8 cm
Internal dimensions: 37.5 × 27.1 × 5.9 cm

 Condition: Excellent.

Biography of Suzuki Shinji (Syu-Zan, 舟山)

Name: Suzuki Shinji (鈴木伸二)
Art Name: Syu-Zan (舟山)
Born: 1928, Tsu City, Mie Prefecture
Died: 1988

Professions: Banker (until 1971), Full-time Bonsai Potter (1971–1988)
Primary Workshop: Tōgō Ward, Aichi Prefecture
Specialization: Handmade unglazed bonsai pots; blended-clay works inspired by classical Chinese Yixing wares

Suzuki Shinji, known professionally as Syu-Zan, was born in 1928 in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture. After leaving banking in 1971, he dedicated himself to ceramics and established his workshop in Tōgō Ward, Aichi Prefecture. Although geographically close to the Tokoname region, Syu-Zan was an independent potter, developing his own artistic identity outside the traditional kiln groups.

Syu-Zan’s work is strongly influenced by 18th–19th century Chinese Yixing bonsai pottery. To replicate the authentic texture and color of antique containers, he blended imported Chinese clay with Japanese clay. His pots are entirely handmade, known for their classical forms, natural surfaces, and a restrained beauty that embodies wabi-sabi (侘寂) and literati aesthetics.

Throughout his career, his pots were repeatedly selected for display at Kokufu-ten (国風展), Japans most prestigious bonsai exhibition. Today, his work is highly prized by collectors for its craftsmanship, rarity, and historical significance. His apprentice, Sen Syu (仙舟), continues his stylistic legacy.
