Description

A finely handcrafted Japanese bonsai pot by Satomi Terahata (寺幡サトミ), the second-generation potter of the Terahata Kiln (寺幡窯) and daughter of the renowned master Mayama Mazan (寺畑真山). Working from Seto (瀬戸市), one of Japan's historic ceramic centres, Satomi continues her family's distinguished tradition of producing elegant bonsai containers that combine refined craftsmanship with beautifully controlled glazes.

Finished in a superb Ruri glaze (瑠璃釉), this rectangular bonsai pot displays a deep cobalt-blue colour with exceptional richness, clarity and depth. The highly lustrous glaze develops subtle tonal variation around the softly rounded lip and along the edges, where the firing has produced delicate movement that enhances the refined simplicity of the overall design.

The body rises through gently flared walls that transition naturally into a broad, softly rounded lip, creating a harmonious profile with excellent visual balance (調和 – chowa). The clean architectural lines are uninterrupted by decorative bands, allowing the quality of the glaze and the elegant proportions to become the defining aesthetic features. Softly radiused corners further refine the silhouette, lending the pot a quiet sense of shibui (渋い) sophistication.

The pot stands on angled, cut, slightly recessed feet, providing a subtle visual lift while maintaining excellent stability. Their crisp geometry complements the refined rectangular form and reflects the thoughtful craftsmanship associated with the Terahata workshop.

The interior is left unglazed in natural buff stoneware, creating an ideal environment for healthy root development. A smoothly rounded internal rim mirrors the exterior profile, while two generous drainage holes and four wiring holes provide excellent drainage and secure anchoring during both cultivation and exhibition.

The underside bears the impressed signature of Satomi Terahata (寺幡サトミ), confirming the pot's authentic handmade origin from the Terahata Kiln.

Condition: Excellent! No chips or cracks, there are some minor scratches on the glaze that comes noticeable under the light and camera lens.

About the Potter – Satomi Terahata (寺幡サトミ)

Satomi Terahata (寺幡サトミ) is the second-generation ceramic artist of the Terahata Kiln (寺幡窯) in Seto, Aichi Prefecture (瀬戸市). She is the daughter of the celebrated potter Mayama Mazan (寺畑真山), founder of the Terahata Kiln, whose work helped establish the family's reputation among collectors of fine Japanese bonsai ceramics.

Following in her father's footsteps, Satomi has continued the Terahata tradition while developing her own refined artistic style. Her work is distinguished by elegant proportions, exceptional glazing techniques and a restrained aesthetic that places emphasis on balance, harmony and functionality. Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, her bonsai pots celebrate the natural beauty of ceramic form and glaze, making them particularly well suited to refined deciduous, flowering and evergreen bonsai.
