Description
This is a refined, artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot (日本製盆栽鉢) by Terahata Satomi, second-generation potter of the Terahata kiln. The form is a classic rectangular shape (長方鉢, chōhō-bachi), offering a calm, architectural presence with excellent visual balance.
The pot features gently flared sides with a subtle taper and a softly defined rim with a slight external lip (口縁, kōen), creating a strong yet elegant framing line. The overall silhouette conveys stability and harmony (安定感のある造形), making it well suited to refined bonsai compositions.
The surface is finished in a cucumber-toned blue glaze, best described as a blue glaze with subtle green undertones. In Japanese ceramic terminology, this falls within 青釉 (seiyū) with 青緑系の色味 (seiryoku-kei no iromi). The glaze displays natural mottling and variation (景色, keshiki), with attractive pooling toward the lower body and feet, enhancing depth and character.
The glaze breaks beautifully over the edges, revealing hints of the underlying grogged clay body (砂混じりの素地, sunamajiri no soji). Over time, the surface has developed a pleasing patina, giving the pot a sense of quiet age and authenticity.
The pot stands on four sculpted, incised feet (彫り足, hori-ashi), carefully proportioned to lift the form while maintaining visual grounding. The underside is neatly finished and bears the incised Terahata kiln signature, confirming authorship.
The interior is unglazed, exposing the natural clay body, and includes two large drainage holes (排水穴, haisui-ana) along with smaller wiring holes (針金穴, harigane-ana), ensuring full practicality for bonsai use.
Overall, this piece presents a strong sense of balance, restrained elegance, and traditional Japanese craftsmanship, making it an excellent choice for collectors and serious bonsai practitioners.
