Description:
A fine vintage Japanese bonsai pot by Tosui (東水), from the Seto-yaki tradition of Aichi Prefecture. This elegant rectangular pot has a soft bag-form profile, or fukuro-gata (袋形), with rounded corners, gently swollen sides, and a well-defined internal rim, uchibuchi (内縁), giving the piece a strong yet refined sense of balance.
The glaze is particularly attractive, showing a deep lapis-blue to green-blue surface with subtle speckling and tonal movement. Around the upper shoulder and rim, the glaze lightens into a soft greenish band, creating excellent depth and contrast against the darker body. The surface has developed a pleasing aged character, or jidai-kan (時代感), with gentle patina and natural signs of use that enhance its collector appeal.
The pot stands on four raised feet with cloud-scroll style incised decoration, kumo-ashi (雲足), left partly unglazed in warm buff clay. This contrast between the glazed body and exposed clay feet gives the pot a classic handmade Seto appearance. The underside shows the impressed Tosui kiln mark, 「東水」, together with two drainage holes, mizunuki-ana (水抜き穴), suitable for bonsai cultivation.
A well-balanced and highly usable artisan bonsai pot, ideal for shohin or small bonsai, especially species that would suit a cool-toned glazed container.
