Uematsu Tosui (Pre-1959), Rectangular Mame Pot

Product Details:

Region: Tokoname 常滑市
Kiln: Tosui kiln (陶翠窯)
Potter: Uematsu Tosui (植松陶翠) – Pre-1959 Tosui kiln)

This pot was sold to me by a Japanese collector, a rare and refined mame bonsai pot by Uematsu Tosui (植松陶翠), the original creator behind the Tosui kiln (陶翠窯) before 1959. Likely rooted in the Tokoname ceramic tradition, this piece reflects the subtle, minimalist aesthetic of early Showa-period Japanese bonsai ceramics.

This unglazed rectangular pot is meticulously crafted with distinctive recessed vertical grooves running from the raised lip down through the slightly recessed stepped feet, adding both structure and vertical movement to the form. A delicate lower band encircles the body, mirroring the visual rhythm of the lip and enhancing the piece’s overall balance.
The lip itself is accented with a refined raised border, giving the piece a quiet strength and completing its shibui (渋い) design — understated yet deeply elegant.

An excellent example of early 20th-century Japanese bonsai pottery — ideal for collectors or display with mame and shohin bonsai.

The base is impressed with Tosui  底部印あり

External dimensions: 11.5 × 8.3 × 4.6 cm
