Description:
A vintage artisan-made Japanese bonsai pot by Touhou (陶峰) of Tokoname. This handsome rectangular bonsai container (長方鉢) is crafted from high-quality unglazed Tokoname clay (無釉), displaying a rich chocolate-brown tone with fine mineral inclusions scattered throughout the clay body. Over the decades the surface has acquired an attractive natural patina (古色), enhancing the depth, warmth, and character of the clay.
The pot features a substantial projecting rounded rim (玉縁) which creates a strong visual frame around the planting area. Beneath the rim, a refined recessed shoulder line encircles the body, introducing subtle definition and visual movement whilst maintaining clean, uninterrupted proportions. The flattened chamfered corners (面取り角) soften the rectangular form and contribute to the pot's balanced and harmonious appearance.
The straight-sided profile is elevated by integrated cut feet (切足), which provide excellent stability and a sense of visual strength without detracting from the simplicity of the overall design. The combination of the broad rim, recessed shoulder line, and carefully proportioned feet gives the container a quiet, understated shibui (渋い) character that is highly characteristic of quality Tokoname craftsmanship.
The interior offers generous planting space and is fitted with two drainage holes (水抜き穴) together with eight wiring holes (針金穴), allowing secure anchoring of bonsai material during both development and exhibition display. Traditional finishing marks remain visible throughout the interior, reflecting the handmade nature of the piece.
The underside bears Touhou's hand-carved signature (爪描き銘) together with a finely carved maple leaf motif (楓葉), a distinctive decorative element associated with the potter's work. The mature patina visible across the underside further enhances the appeal of this vintage Tokoname container.
A versatile and refined bonsai pot suitable for a wide range of deciduous and coniferous subjects, particularly medium-sized chuhin compositions where its strong rectangular form and understated elegance can be fully appreciated.
